Finding a taxi in Fes

In Fes, there are two kinds of taxis to be found; the Grand Taxi cars, that are mainly for transport between cities and to the airports, and the Petit Taxis, that serve customers within the city. The Petit Taxis are easily recognized as they are all red, very small (mostly Fiat Uno and other similar types) and have a roof rack for luggage. At the airport however, look for the Grand taxi (white/cream coloured larger cars, often Mercedes).

The taxis can be found at certain (official or unofficial) taxi stands, or be hailed most anywhere. There is seldom a lack of taxis in Fes, although they tend to be somewhat busy during rush hours.

If you are less than three people, you will soon notice that you might not be the only customer in the same cab; if the driver finds another customer along the route heading in the same direction, he will usually pick him or her up too! Quite a few taxi drivers in Fes also seem to have some trouble finding their way around town, so it often helps to bring a map of your own.

General taxi fares in Fes

First of all, be sure that the taximeter is turned on; the taxi drivers often seem to forget to use it, although they are obliged to. Never accept any set taxi fares, these will inevitably be at least three times higher than with the taximeter.

The starting fare will be around 1.50-3.00 dirhams, depending on the time of day, and the taximeter then adds a few dirhams per kilometer. Taking a taxi in Fes is by western standards generally quite cheap.
